Chaim Saiman is a scholar of Jewish law, insurance law, and private law. Professor Saiman served as the Gruss Visiting Professor of Talmudic Law at both Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, as a visiting fellow at Princeton University, and as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto, Bar-Ilan, Hebrew University and IDC faculties of law. He has also served as an arbitrator on rabbinical courts and as an expert witness in insurance law and Jewish law in federal court.

Professor Saiman received his B.S. from Georgia State University and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. He also studied at Yeshivat Har-Etzion (Gush) and Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh in Israel. Prior to joining the faculty at Villanova, he was an Olin Fellow at Harvard Law School, a Golieb Fellow at NYU Law School, a law clerk to Judge Michael McConnell on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and worked as a corporate associate with the firm Cleary Gottlieb in New York.

The death penalty has fallen out of use in North Carolina, yet our state has the sixth largest death row in the nation. The vast majority of N.C.'s 140 death row prisoners were tried in the 1990s, before a wave of reforms transformed the criminal justice system. Had they been tried under modern laws and standards, most of them never would have been sentenced to death. The Center for Death Penalty Litigation's new report, Unequal Justice: How Obsolete Laws and Unfair Trials Created North Carolina's Outsized Death Row, explores the deep inequities of N.C.'s decades-old death row cases. In the 21st century, family creation often involves many more stakeholders than the nuclear family. Particularly in the area of International Child Adoption (ICA), family creation is a cross-border enterprise that implicates local, national, and global politics and conflicts. In his latest article, published in our Spring 2019 issue, Shani King traces the strengths and infirmities of past and present ICA frameworks and the different national goals embodied in each, and posits that ICA and immigration law should not be thought of as discrete issues, but indeed as two sides of the same coin, embodying the same national stressors and overarching goals. From the very beginning of the epidemic, AIDS was linked to punishment. Calls to punish people living with HIV - mostly stigmatized minorities - began before doctors had even settled on a name for the disease. Punishing Disease looks at how HIV was transformed from sickness to badness under the criminal law and investigates the consequences of inflicting penalties on people living with disease. Trevor Hoppe's new book explores these questions and the further implications of the police power used against diseases like hepatitis and meningitis. Along with Allison Rice from Duke's HIV/AIDS Policy Clinic, who was instrumental in changing North Carolina's HIV criminalization laws, and Robert Suttle from the Sero Project, we will discuss the dangers of punitive and coercive responses to illness in our society and how to design a system that respects the individual while fighting the disease. The ACLU is fighting against the punishment of people who cannot pay money to courts simply because of their poverty, through arrest, jailing, driver's license suspensions, etc. Since courts generate revenue for local governments, these practices funnel poor and low-income people into cycles of debt, poverty, and involvement with the legal system. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's China Intellectual Property (IP) Road Show is a free, one-day program that brings together experts from the U.S. government, academics, IP attorneys, and local business people to share their insights on China and IP issues that will benefit U.S. IP right holders. It includes key participation from the USPTO's China Team, a group of China IP experts who work nationwide to help U.S. businesses and inventors understand how to obtain and enforce IP rights in China.

Speakers at the road shows include IP attorneys with decades experience in helping US companies protect and enforce their IP rights in China. The Road Shows have also enjoyed excellent support from Congressional members as well including Representative John Culberson in the Houston area who spoke at the China IP Road Show in Houston and the Honorable Danny Davis representing the Seventh Congressional District in Chicago who spoke at the Chicago Road Show. Other notable speakers include several federal judges with knowledge and experience in presiding over IP cases involving Chinese companies. This session is for students who will pursue firm employers for 2L summer, including through OCI Segment I at the end of July, but who were previously interested in GPI work and/or have plans to transition to public interest work after a few years of practice. Join Ashley Walker (a career counselor who works primarily with private sector students) and Bethan Eynon (a career counselor who works primarily with GPI students) as we work through tailoring your GPI narrative for interviews with private law firms. A panel of upper-level students working at firms will share how they explained why they are interested in private practice, how they modified their narratives for firm interviews, how they framed their public interest experiences and pro bono for firm interviewers, and how they navigated questions about interest in pro bono work and long-term career goals. Warren Buffet recently called medical costs "the tapeworm of American economic competitiveness." The United States continues to spend more of its GDP on healthcare than any other industrialized nation, yet neither Republican nor Democratic health reform proposals target the problem of rising costs. One problem is that policymakers focus on the purchasing of healthcare-regulating insurance markets or monitoring what patients receive-without scrutinizing the production of healthcare. Duke Law Professor Barak Richman will explore how the healthcare sector can transform into a more affordable and sustainable part of the American economy. Necessary elements will include reorienting the sector to digital technologies, abandoning costly infrastructures, reconceptualizing the role of traditional personnel and practices, and pursuing legal reforms that will emphasize promoting health, not purchasing healthcare.

Join Michael Dreeben JD'81, former U.S. Deputy Solicitor General, and Dean Kerry Abrams as they discuss their lives in the law. From 1988 through 2019, Michael served in the Office of Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice, first as an Assistant to the Solicitor General and then as a Deputy Solicitor General. As Deputy Solicitor General from 1994 to 2019, he supervised the criminal docket for the United States in the U.S. Supreme Court and argued 105 cases before the Court. In June 2017, Michael was detailed to Office of Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III, where he served counselor to the Special Counsel in the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and obstruction of justice. In that capacity, he successfully represented the Special Counsel's Office in federal court against legal challenges to its authority.
