LGBTQ Youth in the Child Welfare System

March 20, 2023 • 12:30 PM • Law School 4045

Duke Law welcomes Samantha Bartosz, the deputy litigation director at Children's Rights to discuss issues facing LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system. At Children's Rights, Samantha has conducted an extensive litigation practice on behalf of classes of children in federal actions brought in Michigan, Rhode Island, Missouri, and Texas. In a talk moderated by Crystal Grant, the director of the Children's Law Clinic, Samantha will explain why there is a disproportionate representation of LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system and examine current advocacy efforts by attorneys and organizers to provide informed legal representation for this population. We will examine nascent legislation targeting LGBTQ youth in states like Texas which allows child welfare agencies to open investigations into families who procure gender affirming care for their children. Sponsored by OUTlaw and the Children's Law Clinic. For more information please contact Rebecca Magid at rebecca.magid@duke.edu
