Science in the Southern Seas: How Science Shapes Whaling and Antarctic Diplomacy
April 04, 2024 • 5:00 PM • Virtual
The Nicolas School for the Environment, International Law Society, and Environmental Law Society are hosting a webinar with Dr. Nick Gales, Vice-Chair of the International Whaling Commission and former head of the Australian Antarctic Program. Throughout his career, Gales has worked at the intersection of Antarctic science and policy, including testifying on behalf of Australia in the landmark International Whaling Commission (IWC) case against Japan for violations of the whaling moratorium. Dr. Gales will be addressing three major themes during the discussion: how geopolitics affect Antarctic diplomacy, the International Whaling Commission, and how scientists can better engage with the world of international diplomacy. Please join us for what promises to be an informative evening! Register here: https://bit.ly/ODWG_DrNickGales. For more information, please contact Katherine French at kkf18@duke.edu.
