Ian Millhiser '06 to receive 2006 Burton Award for Legal Achievement
Ian Millhiser '06 has been named one of 15 recipients of the 2006 Burton Award for Legal Achievement, which honors excellence and clarity in legal writing. Millhiser won for his note, “What happened to a dream deferred? Cleansing the taint of San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez,” published in Duke Law Journal, Vol. 55, No. 2.
Established in 1999 and run in association with the Library of Congress and its Law Library, the Burton National Awards Program rewards practitioners and law students who use “plain, clear,
and effective legal expression,” and avoid “stilted, archaic, and convoluted language,” in legal writing. The Foundation and awards program was founded by William C. Burton,
author of Burton’s Legal Thesaurus and a proponent of “modernized” legal writing.
Millhiser is senior note editor of Duke Law Journal. After graduation he will serve as the assistant director for communications and outreach at the American Constitution Society.
The Burton Awards Program will be presented June 12, 2006, in a ceremony in Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress.
