Duke’s 2006 celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. begins Friday January 13 with a host of events intended to commemorate King’s call for social action and the response of ordinary people that continue to give that call power.

Law and graduate students reach out to Durham school

Duke Law students join other Duke students in hosting the Carter Charter After-school Program’s inaugural “MLK After-school Fair: Never Stop Dreaming” Friday, January 13. Students in grades K-10 will have the opportunity to visit four stations, each designed to convey one of Dr. King’s messages. Duke Law School’s Bar Association Community Service Board, the Black Law Students Association, and the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association coordinated the event with the help of a grant provided by the Duke University Community Service Center and the support of the University’s Office of Community Affairs and the Law School’s Office of Student Affairs.

MLK film festival

Duke Law School also hosts the Martin Luther King Film Festival Night Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m. in the fourth floor cinemas. Co-sponsored by the Black Graduate Professional Student Association and the Law School’s Office of Student Affairs, the film festival features a variety of movies chosen by students as exemplifying Dr. King’s dream in the context of their respective fields of study. These include “Crash,” “Something the Lord Made,” and “Sankofa.”
