Michael Ashley Stein, William and Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law associate professor, will discuss his forthcoming article, The Law and Economics of Disability Accomodations, Thursday Nov. 6. The lecture, held at 12:15 p.m. in Room 3037, is sponsored by the Duke Law Journal and will be followed by an open reception in the fourth-floor loggia.

The Americans with Disabilities Act provides a clear mandate that disabled workers be provided with "reasonable" accommodations, but does not meaningfully articulate the standards by which reasonableness ought to be measured. Currently, neither courts nor commentators have provided a systematic model for analyzing accommodation claims.

Professor Stein will discuss his proposal on how disability-related accommodations could be analyzed in a law and economics framework, and how this method of analysis leads to solutions for covering costs of accommodations. Through his article, Professor Stein stakes out a unique perspective on disability accommodations, and provides an avenue for continued discussion and debate over how disability accommodations ought to be measured.
