Rare Books Policy
Books from the collection are available for use in the Library between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. Assistance with rare books is provided at the Reference Desk.
The majority of our rare books are housed offsite in order to provide ideal temperature and humidity conditions for preservation. Many of our books are available digitally, either via our library or other institutions. We encourage use of digital versions and limit the circulation and use of this collection.
All requests to use rare books should be directed to the Reference Desk and must include the reason that a digital version does not meet research needs. Rare books approved for in library use must be requested in advance, and visits to use these materials must be scheduled during a time that the library is open to the public and the Rare Book Reading Room is available. We cannot accommodate same day requests.
Rare books may not be used in the presence of food or drink, including spill-proof cups. Those working with rare books should use only pencils, rather than pens or other writing instruments.
Rare books may not be photocopied by users. In special circumstances users may request that photocopies be made by library staff.
