Buchanan and Krouse assume new roles in alumni engagement
Buchanan will stay connected to the Law School, building relationships across the University, while Krouse continues a tradition of excellence in alumni relations.

After nearly 20 years of strengthening relationships with alumni and donors at the Law School, Kate Buchanan is serving in a role that will add a new dimension to fundraising work at Duke.
Effective January 1, Buchanan is the Senior Advisor for Philanthropy and Campus Collaboration. She will continue her principal gifts and campaign strategy work at the Law School while also lending her fundraising, strategy, and operations expertise to Dave Kennedy, the University’s vice president for alumni engagement & development, and his team.
Buchanan T’92 received her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law. She has worked with Duke Law’s alumni and development team since 2004, most recently as Associate Dean, helping the Law School exceed its fundraising goals in the Duke Forward campaign and financial aid initiatives and nurturing alumni engagement programs and volunteer leadership boards.
“Her successful experience leading the alumni and development team at the Law School as well as her active and influential participation in University partnerships across campus make Kate an ideal person to help bridge development goals of the school and units with central development,” said Kerry Abrams, the James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke Dean of the School of Law.
Krouse elevated to Associate Dean
Geoff Krouse ’97 T’93 has been named Associate Dean for Alumni and Development and will lead the team at a critical time for Duke Law School and Duke University. After practicing corporate law for nearly 20 years, Krouse joined the Law School staff in 2016 as Assistant Dean for Alumni & Development, managing the major gifts and annual giving teams and driving critical strategic fundraising initiatives. Additionally, he teaches at Duke Law as a senior lecturing fellow. Krouse said he is grateful for Buchanan’s continued service to the Law School and looks forward to partnering with her in her new role.
“Geoff’s success in the Assistant Dean role, and that of the stellar alumni and development team at Duke Law, makes this a seamless and natural progression of leadership,” Abrams said. “Please join me in congratulating Kate and Geoff on their accomplishments and thanking them for their service to Duke.”
David W. Ichel '78 T'75, a longtime volunteer and supporter of Duke Law School, former Chair of the Board of Visitors, and current member of the Board of Visitors, applauded the transition.
“It will be great having Kate's high-level input to our University-wide initiatives while having Geoff step up as the new leader for the Law School's development efforts. Geoff has gotten a great chance to learn at Kate's side and brings his own tremendous experience as both a Duke Law student and former Big Law partner with great connections to our law alumni base,” Ichel said. “It is definitely a 'win-win' moment for Duke Law and Duke University."
