Duke Law alumni in the news recently for promotions, career changes, honors, and awards
Dorrian Horsey JD ’06 has been named partner at Minc Law in Cleveland. Dorrian focuses her practice on internet defamation, online privacy, cybersecurity, and digital harassment issues, particularly cases involving defamation, content removal, data protection, privacy violations, cyberbullying, online harassment, and DMCA/copyright issues.
With a background in litigation and communications law, including working at Greensboro-based Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard and Vorys Sater, Seymour and Pease in Cleveland, Dorrian joined Minc Law in 2020 and has successfully represented clients in state and federal courts, securing the permanent removal of defamatory content, identifying anonymous users, and protecting clients against various forms of online harassment and privacy violations.
Ruben Henriquez JD '14 has been elected partner at Davis Polk. A member of the firm's finance practice in New York, Ruben advises direct lenders in a wide range of private credit financings, including senior stretch and unitranche facilities, club financings and recurring revenue transactions.
He also has significant experience representing major investment and commercial banks in secured syndicated first-lien and second-lien financings and cross-border acquisition financings. Prior to joining the firm, he worked at White & Case, Golub Capital, and Bracewell.
Peter “Chip” Korn JD '96 has been elected to the executive committee of Foley Hoag. Chip is a corporate and securities attorney in the firm’s New York office who previously served as co-chair of its business department. He has spent nearly 30 years advising high-growth companies and their investors on venture capital, private equity, and M&A transactions and regularly serves as outside counsel to technology companies and venture funds across all stages of growth. Previously he was a partner at Dentons.
Chichi Lee LLM '17 joined Yale Law School in July as a lecturer in legal practice after serving for more than six years as an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. As an appellate prosecutor, Chichi briefed and argued cases before the Massachusetts Appeals Court and Supreme Judicial Court and handled post-conviction motions in the trial courts.
Additionally, he assisted and directed investigations in a variety of cases, including homicides, with an emphasis on investigations involving search warrants and digital evidence. Chichi earned his LLB from Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan. At Yale Law, he will teach Introduction to Legal Analysis and Writing and Essentials of Legal Writing. He is also an advisor to the Harvard Law School Mock Trial Association.
Brett Pearlman JD ’07 has joined Cleary Gottlieb as a partner in its Capital Solutions and Private Credit group, where he will focus on private credit, special situations, and liability management exercises.
In addition to his extensive legal experience at international law firms, Brett accumulated more than a decade of experience at several investment firms. He acted as a principal at an independent investment firm focused on providing financing solutions to middle-market companies. He also served as a senior vice president at a global private equity firm, where he oversaw its private debt portfolio of over 150 companies and served as a director on several portfolio company boards across asset classes.
Catherine Peshkin JD ’03 has been appointed dean for student services at Harvard Law School. Catherine, who has served as interim dean for student services since October 2024, was previously the assistant dean for its Graduate Program and International Legal Studies, overseeing graduate student recruitment as director of admissions and financial aid and working closely with nearly 2,000 LLM and SJD students. She received a Dean’s Award for Excellence in 2018.
Catherine began her career in academic administration at Duke Law as the assistant director of JD admissions. She then earned a joint JD/MBA degree at Duke and spent several years practicing law in New York, where she was an associate in the business finance and restructuring group at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, and later an associate, then partner, in the corporate restructuring group at Kirkland & Ellis.
Nathan Sales JD ’00 has joined Holland & Knight as a partner in its Public Policy & Regulation Group, as well as its National Security & Defense Industry Group. Nathan, a former U.S. Department of State Ambassador, held a variety of senior leadership roles at the State Department during the first Trump Administration. He served as the acting Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights.
Concurrently, he was the Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator for Counterterrorism, serving as the principal adviser to the Secretary of State on international counterterrorism matters and leading the State Department's Counterterrorism Bureau.
He also was the Special Presidential Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Nathan also held senior roles at the Department of Homeland Security, leading policy initiatives on border security and visa programs, and at the Department of Justice, where he developed and implemented national security initiatives and worked on federal judicial appointments.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Nathan was the founder and principal of Fillmore Global Strategies, where he provided clients in the U.S. and abroad with legal and strategic advice on national security and international issues.
Janet Ward Black JD ’85 will be inducted into North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Hall of Fame this fall. Janet is the owner of Ward Black Law in Greensboro, one of the state’s largest woman-owned law firms and has held leadership roles in several of North Carolina’s most prominent legal organizations.
She served as the third woman president of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers (now NCAJ) and was the fourth woman president of the NCBA, during which she created the 4ALL program, which provides free legal information to North Carolinians each spring through a statewide call-in service.
Janet was also the first female assistant district attorney in Rowan and Cabarrus Counties and recently served as Vice Chair of the Board of Legal Aid of North Carolina. Since 2013, Ward Black Law has donated 10% of its gross revenue annually to nonprofits.
