Alumni in the news for awards, honors, and promotions

Robert Bell ’02 has joined the trial practice group at Duane Morris in New York as special counsel. Robert focuses his practice on advising highly regulated global companies on a variety of government regulatory and enforcement matters brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and other federal, state and local agencies. He also provides his clients with crisis response and real-time legal advice and support during government investigative activities.

An essay by Madison Cash '24 was recommended in a recent issue of the Legal Vigilance Bulletin. The paper, "Uploading Culture: Navigating the International Humanitarian Legal Framework Governing Cultural Property in the Metaverse," was written for the Center on Law, Ethics and National Security (LENS) Essay Series while Madison was a student at Duke Law and can be read here.

Ellen Goodrich '23 has joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press as the Jack Nelson-Dow Jones Foundation Legal Fellow. Ellen was a co-recipient of the inaugural Farrin Fellowship and spent the past year as a legal fellow at the Student Press Law Center. Ellen was a student-attorney in Duke Law's First Amendment Clinic.

John Hasnas '78 PhD '88 has published his third book, Common Law Liberalism: A New Theory of the Libertarian Society (Oxford University Press). John is a professor and executive director of the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics in the McDonough School of Business, with an appointment as a professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center. He is a prolific scholar with two books on ethics to his credit and writings that also address issues of free speech on campus.

Colm McInerney LLM ’07 has been promoted to counsel at Skadden. Colm represents companies in consumer arbitrations, mass arbitrations and consumer class action litigation. He also has extensive experience representing clients in complex commercial and international disputes before trial and appellate courts in the U.S. and before U.S. and international arbitral tribunals.

Roy Michael Roman '22 has been named one of the "20 Under 40 People to Watch" by the Cleveland (TN) Banner. After working as an associate at Kirkland & Ellis, Roy Michael returned to his hometown to open a law office, RMR Legal, that focuses on low income and underserved populations. He is highly involved in community organizations and events in Cleveland, a small city of about 50,000 people in southeastern Tennessee.

Elle Stuart ’17 was recognized on Law360's 2024 "Rising Star" list, one of only three lawyers in the transportation field to be recognized. Elle is a maritime attorney in the public policy group at K&L Gates, where she focuses her practice on legislative and regulatory issues relating to transportation, logistics and infrastructure, with a particular focus on the maritime industry.

Richard C. Van Nostrand '80 was recently selected for inclusion in the 2025 edition of Best Lawyers in America in the fields of arbitration, commercial litigation, employment law - management, and litigation - labor and employment. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers since 2011. Richard is a partner at Mirick O'Connell and has extensive experience in general civil trial work, with concentrations in business and employment litigation.

Allyson Veile '21 joined the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in September as a media litigation fellow. Allyson worked for two years as a legal fellow at the University of Georgia School of Law’s First Amendment Clinic, where she helped litigate a variety of civil rights and media law matters. Before that, she was an associate in Ballard Spahr’s Washington office. At Duke Law, Allyson was a student- attorney in the First Amendment Clinic.

Graham White ’88 has been named to the 2025 edition of Best Lawyers in America. Graham is a shareholder in the trusts and estates department at Winderweedle, Haines, Ward & Woodman in Winter Park, Florida. Graham focuses his practice on estate planning, wealth preservation, estate and gift tax planning, charitable giving strategies, business succession/exit planning, and probate and trust administration.
