Center for Innovation Policy event to feature patent office leaders from U.S, Europe, and Japan
Kathi Vidal, under secretary for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, will be joined at the Nov. 8 event at Duke Law by António Campinos, president of the European Patent Office, and Koichi Hamano, commissioner of the Japan Patent Office.
The director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will meet with her counterparts from the European Union and Japan at Duke Law School on Nov. 8 for a discussion about the importance of intellectual property (IP) and making the patent system more accessible to small- and medium-sized businesses.
Kathi Vidal, under secretary for intellectual property and director of the USPTO, will be joined at the event by António Campinos, president of the European Patent Office, and Koichi Hamano, commissioner of the Japan Patent Office. Representatives from local businesses, universities, and the investor community will be on hand to talk about their particular IP-related concerns.
This meeting was organized by the three patent offices in collaboration with the Center for Innovation Policy at Duke Law, a forum for independent analysis and balanced discussion of policies for promoting technological innovation that enhances long-term social welfare. It is being held as part of the 40th conference of the Trilateral Cooperation, a forum that the three offices established in 1983 to explore ways to streamline and harmonize patent examination practices and procedures for the benefit of the global innovation community.
“We at Duke are delighted to continue our tradition of working with government agencies to promote innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Arti K. Rai, the Elvin R. Latty Professor of Law at Duke and co-director of the Center for Innovation Policy.
Rai, an internationally recognized expert in IP law, innovation policy, administrative law, and health law, served as senior advisor on innovation law and policy issues to the Department of Commerce’s Office of General Counsel last year. From 2009-2010, she headed the Office of Policy and International Affairs at USPTO.
