CLRP hosts Justice & Health Care Student Lunch & Conversation

Dayna Bowen Matthew and H. Timothy Lovelace, Jr.

On November 13, 2024, the Center on Law, Race & Policy (CLRP) hosted Justice & Health Care Student Lunch & Conversation with GWU Law School Dean Dayna Bowen Matthew. In co-sponsorship with the Theology, Medicine and Culture Initiative at the School of Divinity, CLRP hosted this event as a part of the 2024 Richard Payne Lecture in Faith, Justice, and Health Care. Duke Law Professor H. Timothy Lovelace, Jr. conducted the lunchtime interview, followed by an active question and answer session with students from the law school and Duke University.

During the conversation, Dean Bowen Matthew reflected on the meaning of justice and what justice means to her. She drew critical connections between justice and health, how disparities in health drive up economic costs, equal protection considerations for the health disparity conversation, and even the role of physicians and patients in desegregating hospitals. Dean Bowen Matthew also emphasized the role of higher education institutions and their leaders in the fight for equitable health care outcomes.

The Richard Payne Lecture and Award in Faith, Justice, and Health Care highlights and honors academic, clinical, and lay leaders who in their work and research embody the late Dr. Payne's spirit of caring for the whole person.
