Federal Public Defender Externship and Justice Alito Seminar: Applications Due May 4th
Students who have completed the ethics requirement and three semesters of law school (rising 3Ls and summer starters) may apply now for the Federal Public Defender’s Externship for Fall 2012. This integrated externship consists of a 2-credit class taught in part by Professor Jim Coleman and Jennifer Dominguez, and a 4-credit externship placement in the Federal Public Defender’s Office in the Eastern District of North Carolina (Raleigh). Students must commit to two full days (8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) in the FPD office each week, either Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays. The course is tentatively scheduled to meet in the fall on Thursdays from 6-7:45 p.m. at the Law School. Enrollment in the course is limited to 10 students, and applications (a current resume and one-page statement of interest) are due to Dean Bart by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 4th. Students may apply now for a one-credit seminar taught by Associate Justice Samuel Alito of the United States Supreme Court titled Current Issues in Constitutional Interpretation that will meet for one week in September 2012. Applications (a transcript, resume, names of two faculty members who can serve as references, and a statement of interest that explains why you want to take the seminar, how it fits with your goals, and how your perspective will benefit the course discussions) should be submitted to Dean Tia Barnes by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 4th. Enrollment is limited to 12 students from the Classes of 2013 and 2014, but some preference may be given to students in the Class of 2013.
