Professor Michael D. Frakes has been named one of three editors-in-chief of the American Law and Economics Review, the official scholarly journal of the American Law and Economics Association (ALEA).
Frakes, the A. Kenneth Pye Distinguished Professor of Law, is an empirical scholar of health law and innovation policy. He joined the Duke Law faculty in 2016 and holds a secondary appointment in Duke University’s economics department. He is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Frakes’ research in health is largely focused on understanding how certain legal and financial incentives affect the decisions of physicians and other health care providers. He is currently serving as the principal investigator on National Institutes of Health-funded study exploring the effects of immunizing physicians from medical liability on the extent and quality of the medical care they deliver.
Frakes’ research in innovation policy centers on exploring the determinants of behaviors and outcomes at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is co-principal investigator on a study on how to improve the process of pharmaceutical patent approvals, also funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Frakes’ scholarship has appeared in leading economics, law, and medicine journals, including the American Economic Review, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Review of Economics and Statistics, Stanford Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, and the Journal of American Medical Association. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies.
In June, a paper Frakes co-authored was selected as the best submission in Health Law, Insurance Law, and Torts at the annual meeting of the ALEA. He joined the board of the organization in 2022.
