Third Annual National Pretrial Advocacy Competition - Stetson University
The Third Annual National Pretrial Advocacy Competition is co-sponsored by Stetson University College of Law and the Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Bar. The competition captures what attorneys do every day in offices and courtrooms across the nation -- pretrial motion practice. Competing teams receive a problem containing two issues that would require pretrial solution. Each team writes two briefs -- one for the respondent and one for the petitioner. Then, upon submitting their briefs, teams receive supplemental information that may alter or negate the arguments they submitted. At the competition, teams present oral arguments, examine witnesses, and ultimately attempt to synthesize law and new facts in a final argument.
The two preliminary rounds will be held Friday, October 8. The seminal and final rounds will take place on Saturday, October 9. An awards banquet will be held Saturday, October 9, following the final round. During the banquet, awards will be presented to the top four teams, the top four oralists, and for the best team brief. Each student participant will receive a certificate of achievement for participation.
This year, Stetson has opened the competition to include 12 teams.
