Recent actions by the Trump administration raise many unresolved legal issues. Although much of the focus has been on the US constitution, many of these actions also raise challenging issues of international law. Executive orders on immigration and the “global gag rule” implicate human rights and refugee law. Plans to withdraw the US from or renegotiate NAFTA and introduce a border adjustment tax affect international trade law. US compliance with multilateral treaties and its participation in international organization will be tested by proposals to exit or ignore legal commitments ranging from NATO, to the Paris Agreement on climate change, to the Iran nuclear deal. Professors Brewster, Helfer and Huckerby will give an overview over these and other international law issues implicated by the Trump administration’s policies. The panel will be moderated by Professor Michaels. Co-sponsored by the Center for International and Comparative Law and the International Law Society. Lunch will be provided.
