Duke Law celebrates Class of 2017

Duke Law will honor its Class of 2017 at the School’s hooding ceremony on May 13 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Graduation festivities begin with a gala on May 11 and include a family barbeque and an LLM dinner in Star Commons.

The graduates include 222 receiving JD degrees, 12 of whom are also receiving an LLM in international and comparative law, two who are also receiving an LLM in Law and Entrepreneurship, and 13 who also earned master’s degrees from other schools. Ninety-two international lawyers are receiving an LLM degree, eight graduates are receiving an LLM in Law and Entrepreneurship, and two are receiving the SJD degree, the highest in law.

Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch will address the graduates. Gabrielle Lucero and Michelle Mansour will also offer remarks on behalf of their respective JD and LLM classes.

Dean David F. Levi will lead the hooding ceremony, which begins at 5:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Duke University’s West Campus, and will be followed by a champagne toast in Star Commons. Other graduation celebrations include the gala and presentation of the Justin Miller Awards beginning at 7:00 p.m. on May 11 in Star Commons, and a family barbeque on May 12 at The Rickhouse, 609 Foster Street in Durham, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Candlelight Dinner for international students and guests in Star Commons on May 12 begins at 7:00 p.m.

Among their many activities and achievements, members of the class of 2017 have advised entrepreneurs, assisted in the release of wrongfully convicted citizens, prevailed in court on behalf of clinical clients, worked closely with the United Nations on issues related to international human rights, received honors for work in bankruptcy law and pro bono efforts, and helped lead an ongoing conversation about diversity and inclusion.
